Elon Musk Signals Shift Away From Political Role to Prioritize Tesla

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he would focus on managing Tesla and significantly reduce his political activities.

Despite a downturn in the New York stock market that day, Tesla shares surged by over 2%.

Continuing as CEO for Five More Years

During a virtual interview at the Bloomberg Qatar Economic Forum held in Doha, Musk confirmed that he would lead Tesla for the next five years, stating there is no doubt about his commitment to remain CEO.

He expressed his intention to retain the CEO position to maintain control over Tesla, asserting that he would secure sufficient voting rights to prevent activist investors from ousting him.

Musk emphasized, “It’s not a money thing, it’s a reasonable control thing over the future of the company.”

Last year, Musk actively participated in U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. Following Trump’s second term inauguration in January, Musk assumed leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spending considerable time in Washington, D.C.

However, Musk’s political endeavors faced significant backlash, leading to a sharp drop in Tesla’s stock price. Consequently, he stated during last month’s earnings announcement that he would drastically reduce his time dedicated to DOGE starting in late May, committing to only one or two days a week for government duties.

Significantly Reducing Political Activities

Musk, who was one of the most active fundraisers for Trump’s re-election campaign last year, stated on Tuesday that he would dedicate much less time to political fundraising events moving forward.

Not only did Musk lead Silicon Valley political fundraising events, but he also invested heavily in Trump’s re-election efforts, spending over 250 million USD to play a crucial role in Trump’s campaign.

However, when asked at the Qatar Economic Forum whether he would spend a similar amount on future elections, Musk replied in the negative.

“In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said, explaining, “I think I’ve done enough.”

Nevertheless, Musk hinted that he does not intend to completely withdraw from politics.

He indicated that while he doesn’t currently see a reason to engage in political spending, he would consider it if a reason arose in the future.
