Trump’s Back-to-Back Calls with Putin and Zelenskyy Aim to End Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had a “very good” call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The call took place one day after Trump had a 90-minute phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed a ceasefire in Ukraine, U.S.-Russia relations, Middle East peace, and arms reduction.

On Wednesday, Trump posted on his Truth Social account that he had a one-hour call with Zelenskyy and that the discussion focused on the previous day’s conversation with Putin.

According to Trump, his conversation with Zelenskyy aimed to align Russia and Ukraine regarding their respective demands and needs.

He expressed optimism, saying, “We are very much on track” and expected the Ukraine ceasefire and peace negotiations to bear fruit.

Trump also mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz would soon release an official explanation outlining the key points of the discussions.

During Tuesday’s call with Putin, Trump brokered an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to halt attacks on energy and infrastructure for 30 days and begin peace talks in the Middle East. However, this bilateral U.S.-Russia agreement excluded Ukraine, raising concerns that Kyiv was sidelined in the negotiations.

To counter these concerns, Trump made a symbolic move by speaking with Zelenskyy the next day, signaling that Ukraine was not being left out.

Following the Trump-Putin call, Russia and Ukraine agreed to refrain from attacking specific targets, opening the door for ceasefire negotiations after more than three years of war.

However, the situation remains tense. Both sides continue to accuse each other of preparing for or carrying out attacks.

Russia has claimed that Ukraine was attempting to launch drone strikes on oil storage facilities in the Krasnodar region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out a large-scale aerial drone attack on hospital buildings in the northeastern Sumy region, causing significant damage.
