South Korean President’s Bold Statement: ‘I Take Full Responsibility!’

Newsis

On Thursday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol stated, “We must clearly distinguish what needs to be addressed, and it’s not that my wife did well. I should act prudently in all matters, and causing concern to the public is unequivocally wrong.”

During the press conference at the Yongsan presidential office, he remarked, “As I have been targeted since my tenure as Prosecutor General, the exaggeration regarding my wife and fabrication of actions she had not taken go beyond basic misrepresentation, demonizing her considerably.”

Yoon emphasized, “The First Lady should support the president during elections and assist in governance. If people label the First Lady’s support for the president and her efforts to facilitate smooth governance as corruption, we need to revise the definition of the term.”

He also noted, “Regarding public engagements, since the citizens ultimately scrutinize them, she should pursue activities that the people approve of and refrain from those they disapprove.” He added, “She has effectively suspended all activities, except those my administration and I deemed essential for national interests or diplomatic protocol, taking public opinion into full consideration. We will maintain this approach.”

Regarding Kim Keon Hee’s private messages, Yoon explained, “I believe she tried to express gratitude for any assistance received, even if it’s just a small word of thanks.” He noted, “I take full responsibility. I should have adjusted my communication methods during my candidacy, transition period, and presidency.”

He continued, “I maintain numerous contacts through Telegram and text messages. Although there are risks, I believe that there are also benefits. Moving forward, I plan to mitigate these risks to ensure that the people do not feel concerned or upset.”
