Polls Show Harris vs. Trump Race Tightening as Election Nears

Yonhap News Agency

As the U.S. presidential election nears, recent polls indicate that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is losing the advantage she previously held over her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.

On Monday, Al Jazeera reported that surveys conducted by the three major U.S. news networks show a tightening race, with some polls even indicating a tie between the two candidates.

In a joint poll by ABC News and Ipsos, Harris leads with 50% of the vote compared to Trump’s 48%, a narrower margin than the 6-point lead she held in last month’s poll. Similarly, a CBS News and YouGov poll showed Harris’s lead shrinking to 51% against Trump’s 48%, down from a 4-point advantage. Meanwhile, NBC News reported that both Trump and Harris are now tied at 48%, erasing the 5-point lead Harris had in the previous month’s survey.

The shift in support is raising concerns for the Democratic Party, particularly as Harris struggles to maintain solid backing from key demographic groups, including Hispanic and Black voters, who have traditionally supported Democrats. While Harris continues to enjoy strong support from women across racial lines, Hispanic and Black men have increasingly gravitated toward Trump in recent years.

A weekend poll from The New York Times and Siena College revealed further challenges for Harris. According to Al Jazeera, support from Black voters has fallen to 76% and from Hispanic voters to 56%, representing a decline compared to the 2016 and 2020 elections. These numbers reflect Harris’s growing struggle as the election approaches, particularly in securing support from traditionally strong Democratic constituencies.
