Is Robert Kennedy Jr. the Spoiler in the Race Against Harris?

Yonhap News

Robert Kennedy Jr., running as an independent in the upcoming November U.S. presidential election, is drawing significant attention for his efforts to challenge Vice President Kamala Harris’s chances of winning.

Kennedy’s vice-presidential running mate, Nicole Shanahan, appeared on the “Impact Theory” podcast yesterday. During the interview, Shanahan discussed whether Kennedy’s candidacy could potentially impact former President Donald Trump’s chances in the election. Shanahan, a patent attorney, expressed concerns about Harris’s prospects.

She stated, “I take very seriously the need to ensure that someone who has corrupted our fair and free democracy does not get elected.” Shanahan also noted that while continuing their campaign or forming a new party might risk Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz winning, another option could be withdrawing their candidacy and aligning with Trump’s camp.

Polls suggest that many of Kennedy’s supporters have shifted their backing from Trump rather than from Harris. Shanahan emphasized that Kennedy’s campaign expenditures were meant to ensure a fair election rather than disrupt it. She criticized the Democratic Party for allegedly obstructing Kennedy’s campaign through various tactics, including preventing candidate registration in states, manipulating polls, and infiltrating campaign teams.

The Kennedy family has traditionally been associated with the Democratic Party. Robert Jr.’s father, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1968 during a campaign rally, and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1963.

Shanahan denied a Washington Post report claiming Kennedy had sought to join Harris’s administration as a future cabinet member, calling it fake news. She speculated that if Trump were re-elected, Kennedy might be considered for the Secretary of Health and Human Services position.

Regarding her political ambitions, Shanahan mentioned that she is contemplating a run for Governor of California in 2026.
