Nation on Edge: Biden Condemns Assassination Attempt on Trump

Yonhap News

On the 14th, U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and emphasized the importance of national unity.

In a national address at the White House, Biden said, “Last night, I spoke with Donald Trump,” adding, “I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering. We had a short but good conversation.”

Biden condemned the act, stating, “There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever. Period. No exception. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”

He also expressed condolences to the victims and their families who were affected by the incident at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania the previous day.

Biden mentioned that the FBI is investigating its early stages, and the suspect’s intent has not yet been determined. He urged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions and emphasized his call for a prompt and thorough investigation.

He emphasized that Trump, as a Republican candidate and former president, already benefits from a high level of protection. He also mentioned that he has consistently directed the Secret Service to provide all necessary resources and means for Trump’s protection.

This statement aimed to block speculation that some Republicans and the Trump camp had requested additional security measures from the authorities but were denied.

Biden also said, “I’ve directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention.”

Meanwhile, Biden, who was initially scheduled to campaign in Texas the next day, postponed his schedule due to the shooting incident involving Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris canceled her campaign in Palm Beach County, Florida, on the 16th.
