Once hailed as a model for pandemic control during the COVID-19 outbreak, Taiwan is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with the infection rate doubling in just a week. According to reports from the Chinese Herald and other sources on the 19th, Taiwan’s Department of Health and Welfare’s Disease Control Agency announced that they believe the country is entering a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Disease Control Agency reported that confirmed COVID-19 cases rose from 329 between the 4th and 10th to 623 between the 11th and 17th, marking an increase of 294 in just one week.
Furthermore, they reported that two infants, aged three and eight months, contracted COVID-19 and developed pneumonia symptoms within one to two days of infection. They have been receiving intensive care in the ICU for five days.
A Taiwan University School of Medicine professor said that COVID-19 infections could peak in July if the current trend continues. He urged citizens to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
