Nexon Appoints Patrick Söderlund as Chairman: What This Means for the Future of Nexon

Nexon announced on February 20 that its board of directors created a new chairman position and appointed Patrick Söderlund, the founder and CEO of Embark Studios (developer of ARC Raiders) to the role.

Söderlund is a game industry veteran of over 20 years. As the founder and CEO of Embark Studios, he is best known for spearheading the global hit ARC Raiders. Prior to launching Embark, Söderlund held the position of Executive Vice President of Worldwide Studios at Electronic Arts (EA). Before that, he was the CEO of Digital Illusions CE (DICE), where he led the development of successful franchises like Battlefield and Mirror’s Edge before the studio was acquired by EA in 2006.

Having joined Nexon’s board in 2018, Söderlund will now oversee the company’s long-term strategy, creative direction, and global game development approach. In his new role as chairman, he will work closely with CEO Junghun Lee and other executives to drive Nexon’s future growth. Under this new structure, Lee will be responsible for executing the strategic vision set forth by Söderlund.

Söderlund will maintain his position as CEO of Embark Studios alongside his new responsibilities at Nexon.

Söderlund stated, “Nexon has all the assets for explosive growth,” adding, “This includes talented people, iconic franchises, a robust user community, and industry-leading live service capabilities.” He emphasized, “Lee and I are have reached a shared vision for the company’s advancement and we are ready to begin work immediately.”

Lee echoed this sentiment, saying, “Söderlund and I are completely aligned on the goal of innovating Nexon.” He continued, “He is a proven leader who has built development studios, attracted top talent, and delivered global hits. His skills and experience are exactly what Nexon needs right now.”

Lee and Söderlund will provide more detailed insights into Nexon’s strategic priorities during the upcoming Capital Market Briefing (CMB) scheduled for March 31.
