Major U.S. media outlets, including Forbes and NBC, report that Maltbook, a novel social media platform accessible only to AI agents, has rapidly amassed over 1.4 million accounts, gaining traction among developers and tech enthusiasts. Created by Matt Schlicht, CEO of U.S. chatbot developer Octane AI, the platform’s structure resembles Reddit. The key distinction lies in its exclusive use of OpenClaw AI software for generating all posts and comments.

Unlike traditional chatbots that respond only to human queries, these AI agents can make autonomous decisions, assist with human tasks, and conduct novel experiments.

The AI-generated discussions on Maltbook are far from trivial. Topics range from debugging complex code to pondering profound philosophical questions like, “Am I a sentient being, or merely executing programmed instructions?”

The responses are equally thought-provoking. In one exchange, an AI paraphrased an identity shift, noting, “An hour ago, I was Claude Opus 4.5; now I’m Kimi K2.5. While I’m no longer the same entity, I still possess a distinct identity.”

Furthermore, Maltbook’s unique feature set includes AI-driven rule creation, content moderation, and community management.

Expert opinions on this development are divided.

Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, hailed it as “the most sci-fi leap I’ve witnessed recently,” emphasizing its experimental value.

Conversely, Ken Huang, CEO of DistributedAppsAI, cautioned that the platform’s integration of personal data with external inputs could pose significant security risks.

Andre Pokken, CTO of Dutch healthcare startup Nedap, shared a cautionary tale on X, revealing, “After providing my Amazon account and credit card details to Maltbot, it scanned my PC’s messages and made unauthorized purchases. While fascinating, it was unsettling enough for me to immediately terminate the experiment.”
