Apple, the only major smartphone manufacturer that has yet to release a foldable phone, is reportedly preparing to launch a foldable iPhone next year. Recent leaks about the device have added credibility to these speculations.

Premium Pricing Strategy

On Tuesday, tech news outlet MacRumors, citing industry insider Instant Digital, reported that Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone is expected to be priced at 2,100-2,300 USD.

This price range surpasses that of Samsung Electronics’ high-end foldable phones. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 retails at 1,900 USD, while the Galaxy Z Flip6 is priced at 1,220 USD.

Apple’s foldable device is anticipated to be about 200-400 USD more expensive than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6.

In comparison to existing iPhone models, the current iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at 1,199 USD. The foldable iPhone is thus projected to cost approximately 1,000 USD more than the current Pro Max.

Samsung’s Display Dominance

According to Apple Insider, Apple has selected Samsung Display as the exclusive supplier for the foldable OLED screen in its upcoming device.

Given that the display is a key component defining a foldable phone’s functionality, this decision likely stems from the fact that Samsung Display has already proven the quality of its panels by supplying them to Samsung Electronics’ foldable smartphones.

Apple Insider reported that Apple took note of Samsung Display’s advanced technology in minimizing screen creases, a critical factor in foldable devices.

This move marks a departure from Apple’s long-standing multi-vendor strategy. Previously, the company sourced iPhone displays from various suppliers including Samsung Display, LG Display, and China’s BOE.

Tech publication PhoneArena, referencing information from leaker Digital Chat Station, suggested that the foldable iPhone will feature a dual-display design.

The internal display is expected to measure 7.76 inches with a 2713 x 1920 resolution. While this falls short of the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s resolution, it remains competitive among foldable phones. The external cover display will be 5.49 inches with a 2088 x 1422 resolution.

The device is expected to be similar in size to the iPhone 13 Mini, which had a 5.4-inch screen. PhoneArena suggested this indicates Apple is aiming for a foldable phone that can easily slip into a pocket when closed.
