Melania’s Big Payday: What We Know About Her Political Speech Fees

Yonhap News

Melania Trump, the wife of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has come under fire after it was revealed that she received a big check for her speech at a political event.

CNN revealed on Monday that Melania earned $237,500 in speaking fees from a Log Cabin Republicans event held in April.

The Log Cabin Republicans, an organization that advocates for LGBTQ+ members within the GOP, hosted Melania at their gatherings twice this year—in April and July. However, it remains unclear whether she was compensated for her July appearance.

Throughout her husband’s campaign, Melania has maintained a relatively low profile. Nevertheless, her participation in these two events has stirred controversy, especially after disclosing her speaking fees.

Political analysts told CNN that it is uncommon and ethically questionable for a presidential candidate’s spouse to receive payments for involvement in campaign-related activities.

Furthermore, the unclear source of the funds raises concerns, as it may complicate future conflicts of interest. In response, Charles Moran, the president of the Log Cabin Republicans, told CNN that they had never paid Melania for her speech. A source familiar with the events also stated they were unaware of any compensation, asserting that Melania has the right to decide how she spends her time and earns income.
