Marissa Teijo, the 72-year-old contestant who made headlines for participating in the Miss Universe USA beauty pageant, recently shared her secrets for staying youthful.

In an interview with People magazine, Teijo revealed her diet and exercise regimen, which she credits for her vibrant appearance. She explained, “I cut out all sugar and avoid processed meats, white bread, and cheese.”

Teijo’s’ diet primarily consists of vegetables, fruits, and oatmeal, with occasional chicken, fish, and steak servings. On training days, she focuses on sweet potatoes, jasmine or brown rice, and more vegetables and fruits while limiting carbs and avoiding sugar when not in the gym.

She specifically avoids processed meats like ham and sausage, white bread, and cheese, noting their impact on her health.

Teijo emphasized the importance of regular exercise in her routine. She has been weightlifting 5 to 6 days a week since she was 40, noting significant changes in her physique. “Weightlifting has been my most effective exercise,” she said. “It has helped my upper body develop muscles, making my waist look smaller and giving me an hourglass figure.”

Though she has reduced her weightlifting as she ages, Teijo continues to engage in cardio exercises, such as walking. She advises staying active: “I am very active and don’t stop. This is a powerful tip I recommend to everyone. Keep moving, and you’ll be able to stay active as you age.”

Her skincare routine includes daily sunscreen application and proper moisturization.

Teijo, a former elementary school teacher, competed in last month’s Miss Texas USA pageant. While she did not win, her participation has inspired many middle-aged and older women.
