90-Year-Old’s Handy Tool Revealed as a Deadly Grenade After 20 Years

SCMP, News1

The story of a 90-year-old Chinese grandmother who has been using a grenade as a hammer for over 20 years has come to light, drawing significant attention.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on June 27, a 90-year-old grandmother from Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China, found a metal lump with a wooden handle while working in her field 20 years ago.

Thinking the metal lump was a hammer, the grandmother took it home. She used it for various household tasks, such as cracking nuts, pounding peppers in a mortar, and even hammering nails.

The metal lump was revealed to be a grenade during the process of the grandmother repairing her house. The workers who came to repair the house noticed it was a grenade and reported it to the local police.

The local public security authorities responded quickly, dispatching public security officers to the scene and investigating. Upon investigation, the metal lump was identified as a Chinese-made 1967 model grenade.

At the time of discovery, the wooden handle of the grenade was smooth and shiny from years of use. The metal lump had several holes punched in it from repeated hammering, exposing the fuse.

However, it remains unclear why the grenade did not explode.

The police requested that experts destroy the grenade and urged villagers to report any objects suspected of being explosives.
