The police are investigating suspected hacking attacks on personal email accounts of high-ranking officials from the South Korean Ministry of National Defense and the military.
According to the police on the 21st, the Security Investigation Bureau of the National Police Agency identified the attacks and started investigating the damage done to the personal emails of high-ranking officials from the Ministry of National Defense, military generals, and deputy ministers.
It was reported that this cyber attack involved personal email accounts and has not affected any official military servers.
The police are also investigating further into the incident after discovering that about 100 personal emails of domestic residents, including diplomatic security experts, have been hacked in a similar manner.
North Korean hacking organizations are continuously launching cyber attacks to steal the email accounts of key figures in the military and diplomatic security authorities. Last month, the Security Investigation Bureau of the National Police Agency announced the investigation results that North Korea’s three leading hacking organizations—Kimsuky, Lazarus, and Andariel—have been conducting hacking attacks on about 10 domestic defense companies to steal defense technology for the past year and a half.
