HBO’s hit series The White Lotus has sparked controversy with its latest season, particularly after a recent episode hinted at a threesome involving incest. The unexpected backlash now includes Duke University, which has had an issue with how its name is used in the show.

According to The Guardian, many viewers believe the show has pushed boundaries too far this season. Adding to the criticism, Duke University has publicly objected to two main characters being depicted as Duke alumni.

Season 3 follows a family led by Timothy (Jason Isaacs) and his eldest son, Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), both portrayed as Duke graduates.

Episodes 5 and 6 shocked audiences with their content. In Episode 5, Saxon attends a “Full Moon Party” on a yacht with his younger brother Lochlan (Sam Nivola) and friends Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood). The scene shows Lochlan kissing Saxon multiple times.

Episode 6 opens with Saxon waking up naked and disoriented, struggling to remember the previous night after kissing his brother. Chloe then reveals that she, Saxon, and Lochlan were involved in a sexual encounter. Later, Lochlan is seen meditating, attempting to recall what happened.

A Duke University spokesperson addressed the controversy by stating that ‘The White Lotus’ is using their brand without permission and featuring their logo in scenes that do not align with the university’s values, which they find excessive. They added that while they respect artistic expression, having characters wear Duke-branded clothing could create the false impression of an endorsement or partnership that does not exist.

Despite Duke’s objections, The Guardian notes that legal action may be difficult. Jeanne Fromer, a professor specializing in intellectual property law at the New York University School of Law, told The New York Times that artistic use of trademarks is protected under the first amendment.
