A new study suggests that swapping your usual morning meal for oat bran could help you lose weight effectively.

Oat bran contains twice as much fiber as instant oatmeal

According to The Mirror, Dr. Franklin Joseph, a UK-based endocrinologist and director of a weight loss clinic, believes that oat bran is one of the most underrated breakfast options. While most people think all oats are the same, oat bran has much higher protein and fiber levels, making it far more effective for weight loss.

Oat bran, the outer layer of the grain, contains about 50% more protein and nearly twice as much fiber as the instant oatmeal commonly eaten for breakfast.

Research shows that increasing protein and fiber intake helps prolong satiety, which lowers total daily calorie consumption and supports weight loss.

Dr. Joseph explained that his patients who started eating oat bran for breakfast naturally consumed fewer calories throughout the day. He noted that this is because the protein and fiber in oat bran slow down digestion, stabilize blood sugar levels, and prevent snacking, which is a common factor that often derails weight loss efforts.

He emphasized that simply changing your breakfast can lead to weight loss

He further explained that by reducing daily calorie intake by just 500 kcal through oat bran consumption, one can lose about 0.5 kilograms (approximately 1.1 pounds) per week and up to 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) in a month. He recommended adding natural ingredients like fruit or honey to plain oat bran with no additives to enhance flavor.

He added that simply changing your breakfast can aid in weight loss. He explained that adding almond milk, cinnamon, Greek yogurt, or a spoonful of flaxseeds or chia seeds can make breakfast more complete and nutritious. However, he noted that instant oatmeal with added sugar is not recommended.

He emphasized that focusing on the right foods allows one to lose weight without constantly battling hunger. He also advised that instead of relying on extreme calorie reductions, making small changes to one’s diet can offer a more sustainable approach to weight loss.

Oat bran is known for supporting weight loss and providing various health benefits, including better blood sugar control, improved digestion, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Oat bran contains 556 mg of potassium per 100 grams, making it high in potassium. People with kidney disease may struggle to excrete potassium properly, which can lead to potassium buildup in the body. Therefore, individuals with kidney disease should be cautious when consuming oat bran.
