As rumors spread online about a Chinese citizen winning the lottery using generative AI DeepSeek, the lottery operator asserted that predicting winning numbers is impossible.
On Friday, Chinese media outlets, including Beijing Youth Daily, reported that Mr. Li, a resident of Wuhu City in Anhui Province, posted on Weibo (China’s equivalent of Twitter) on the morning of February 11, claiming, “I won the lottery using numbers recommended by DeepSeek.”
Mr. Li reportedly bet 10 yuan (roughly $1.37) on five sets of AI-recommended numbers. One set won a prize of 5 yuan (approximately $0.69).
As a result, Mr. Li actually lost 5 yuan overall. Nevertheless, the rumor that AI could predict lottery outcomes quickly spread on social media platforms.
The phrase “Winning the lottery with DeepSeek” even topped Weibo’s trending searches at one point.
Posts also appeared claiming lottery wins using “GPT AI software.”
In response, the lottery operator took to their official WeChat account and clarified, “Regardless of AI’s capabilities, it cannot predict winning lottery numbers.”
They further explained, “The number drawing process is purely physical. The movement of each ball is influenced by airflow and subtle vibrations, making it impossible to predict or control.”
