The U.S. State Department announced on Monday that it is providing “necessary consular assistance” to Korean nationals arrested during the Trump administration’s extensive crackdown on illegal immigrants.
A State Department official emphasized their awareness of the situation during a meeting with reporters. The official further elaborated that they are also aware of reports indicating growing concern within the Korean-American community regarding the deportation of undocumented immigrants. Additionally, they noted that the Department is closely monitoring related developments.
On January 31, the White House disclosed the arrest of a Korean national convicted of possessing child pornography as part of its promotion of the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.
This man was reportedly sentenced to five years in prison and 20 years of probation for possessing nine counts of child pornography.
During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to deport a significant number of undocumented immigrants. Since taking office, his administration has conducted widespread immigration enforcement operations along the southern border and across the United States. Reports suggest that authorities are mainly targeting individuals with criminal records.
