From Dreams to Nightmares: Paris Faces Backlash Over Olympic Chaos

Newsis

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, citizens of Paris in France are organizing a boycott campaign through social media(SNS), urging people not to visit Paris.

According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 14th, many videos are being shared on social media such as TikTok, warning that visitors to Paris during the Olympics will not have a pleasant experience.

A 24-year-old local college student in Paris with the Tiktok username Leo Nora posted a video that warned, “If you plan to come to Paris to watch the Olympics, don’t come.” She claimed, “Paris will become a dangerous space that resembles hell on Earth during the Olympics.”

Last November, Miranda Starcevic, a 31-year-old French-American living in Paris, also posted a video on TikTok saying, “Don’t come to Paris. Cancel everything,” and stated, “Nobody wants the Olympics. It’s a complete mess.”

The NYT explained that some of these videos have been viewed tens of thousands to more than a million times.

The reaction of these Parisians is interpreted as dissatisfaction with the exacerbation of price and accommodation issues due to the influx of tourists and event organizers from around the world.

The subway fares in Paris have nearly doubled during the Olympics, and various prices have shown sharp increases, which has sparked considerable dissatisfaction. Parisians have raised concerns about traffic disruptions due to strikes, fears of terrorism, and worries about various crimes targeting tourists, such as scams and pickpocketing.

Meanwhile, the Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympics will be held from August 28 to September 8.
