The Unexpected Rise of CD Players in a Streaming Age

KARINA’s Instagram

On May 30, a lifestyle mobile application named Ohouse announced that CD player sales had rapidly increased recently, according to their internal big data analysis.

After analyzing the sales of CD players for one week from May 20, it was found that the transaction volume had grown by 430% compared to the previous week. The number of buyers also increased about tenfold while related search volumes also increased. During the same period, the search volume for the keyword “CD player” increased by about 300% compared to the previous week.

Until now, wall-mounted and stand-type CD players have been popular as elements of interior design within Ohouse, but recently, interest in portable CD players has surged. In particular, transparent CD players that allow you to see inside and CD players filled with retro sentiment, instead of the typical silver and black electronic device feel, have been hitting the tastes of the younger generation.

According to Ohouse, users show their personality by decorating their CD players with stickers and other items. Following wireless earphones and headsets, CD players have emerged as electronic products that serve as fashion items.

A representative from Ohouse said, “Among Gen Z who decorate their smart devices to show their aesthetics, wired earphones, and CD players are popular and are recording high sales within Ohouse.” They added, “We will provide the best customer experience through various product curation with special discount benefits. Customers with unique personalities can find and purchase products that can show themselves through Ohouse.”
