Yonhap News

A police officer who slapped a drunken troublemaker several times has been dismissed.

Recently, the Seoul Gwanak Police Station held a disciplinary committee for the officer who is in his 40s. The officer was charged with assault and dismissed.

The incident occurred in October 2023. During the time, an intoxicated man in his 20s had a dispute with a taxi driver and attacked the responding police officer’s face.

Even when he arrived at the police station, he mocked the officers, saying, “You’re a cop because you’re stupid.” He also harassed a female police officer on duty.

The officer slapped the man eight times while trying to restrain him. The drunken man reported the situation to 911 that he had been hit by a police officer.

The officer apologized to the man and was fined approximately $4,425.

The disciplinary committee explained the reason for the dismissal, stating, “He could have restrained the man using a different method.”
