Girl group NewJeans has faced allegations of plagiarizing the Mexican girl group Jeans. Amidst the controversy of similarity between NewJeans and ILLIT raised by ADOR’s CEO Min Hee Jin, another plagiarism controversy has surfaced.

On the 23rd, users online raised suspicions on social media that NewJeans plagiarized the 1990s Mexican girl group, Jeans.

This suspicion arose as past reports of local Mexican media were spotlighted. Last January, Mexican media El Siglo reported, “Claims that Korea’s NewJeans drew inspiration from the 1990s Mexican group Jeans are emerging online.”

Various media outlets pointed out similarities observed in the visual concept, including the outfits, hairstyles, promotional photos, and music videos of the two groups. It was also mentioned that the name Jeans is included in both group names, and the font used for their logos is similar.

Making comparisons between these two groups, there are quite a few similarities observed in their dance styles, outfits, and fashion.

In response, Paty Sirvent, a member of Jeans, shared a post raising suspicions of NewJeans’ plagiarism on her social media. The post contained the phrase, “I was plagiarized right before my eyes. The name was a clue,” along with photos comparing the similarities between NewJeans and Jeans.

In response, Paty left a brief reaction, “Wow, we weren’t that wrong!” but did not add any additional comments.

Recently, comments regarding the plagiarism suspicions of NewJeans have flooded the official social media account of Jeans. On the 21st, Jeans responded, “We like that the 90s is trending again and that this is influencing the new generation.” They added an emoji with a small heart floating with a smiling face and a K-heart emoji.

Many fans argue that NewJeans and Jeans, being girl groups with a Y2K concept, are bound to have similarities. Some said, “NewJeans concept is a universal 90s sentiment,” and “NewJeans borrowed the concept, ILLIT completely copied it.”
