Presidential Scandal: Luxury Bags Stir Political Storm in South Korea

Newsis

The prosecution will summon Baek Eun Jung, the representative of Seoul’s Voice, who accused South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee of suspicion of receiving a luxury bag.

On May 20th, the Criminal Department 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office summoned Baek as an informant.

Baek reported on the video of the luxury bag delivery. Last December, he accused President Yoon and his wife of violating the Prohibition of Solicitation Act by accepting bribes.

Baek plans to submit to the prosecution the original 30-minute video including the process of delivering the luxury bag and the KakaoTalk conversation data containing the content of Pastor Choi Jae Young, who handed over the luxury bag to the First Lady Kim, soliciting a favor for a third party.

Baek announced that he would file additional accusations against President Yoon and the First Lady at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office on the same day. The content includes suspicions of receiving luxury cosmetics worth $1,500 and liquor worth $335 and suspicions related to requests for financial committee personnel.

On May 13th, the prosecution called Pastor Choi as a suspect and investigated for about 12 hours. On May 21st, the prosecution plans to summon the man who reported to the media that he picked up a book believed to have been given as a gift by Pastor Choi to First Lady Kim.
