Heartbreak in Incheon: Drunk Driver Claims Life of Elderly Recycler

JTBC News

A 70-year-old man who had been living with his wife by selling empty bottles and waste paper was struck and killed by a drunk driver.

According to a JTBC report on May 15th, the accident occurred on a road in Sungui-dong, Incheon, around 10:50 pm on May 13th.

Footage from a closed-circuit television released that day showed the elderly man carrying recycled trash crossing the two-lane roadway.

At that time, a black car approached from a distance, did not slow down, and hit the elderly man, who was thrown into the air, spun around three times, and fell to the ground.

The 29-year-old male driver got out of his car, sat on the sidewalk, and called the police. He did not mention that he had hit a person. He was incoherent, saying, “I don’t know where I am.”

A nearby merchant reported the situation, saying, “The driver called his parents and was asking what he should do.”

The police began to handle the accident only after tracking the call and receiving reports from witnesses.

When paramedics and police arrived, the driver fled into the dark to avoid the scene. He was caught about 500 meters away.

At the time, the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.19%, indicating he was heavily intoxicated. The elderly man who was hit eventually died. The fact that he had been living with his wife by selling empty bottles and waste paper brought about a sense of sorrow.

The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for the driver.
