U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticized the United Nations while highlighting the United States’ role in mediating the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. Trump asserted that this agreement demonstrates that the United States is effectively fulfilling the true role of the UN.
On December 28, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty.” He added, “I want to congratulate both great leaders on their brilliance in coming to this rapid and very fair conclusion.”
He commented that the entire process was “fast and decisive,” and that the U.S. “was proud to help.” Trump then claimed, “With all of the wars and conflicts I have settled and stopped over the last eleven months, EIGHT, perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations.”
However, Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with the UN. He stated that the UN “has been of very little assistance or help in any of them, including the disaster currently going on between Russia and Ukraine.” He concluded, “The United Nations must start getting active and involved in WORLD PEACE!”
Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement last July following armed clashes along their border, but fighting resumed for about 20 days earlier this month. The defense ministers of both countries held talks the previous day and issued a joint statement agreeing to cease hostilities to ease tensions.
Trump reportedly mediated the ceasefire by speaking with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on December 12. This agreement is seen by some as a message from Trump highlighting the U.S.’s role in direct diplomatic mediation.
