Microsoft (MS) is completely overhauling its OpenAI-centered AI strategy by executing a total investment of 15 billion USD in Nvidia and AI startup Anthropic.
On Tuesday, Microsoft announced new strategic partnerships with Nvidia and Anthropic. Microsoft and Nvidia will invest 5 billion USD and 10 billion USD, respectively, in Anthropic.
Since 2019, Microsoft has poured billions into OpenAI, becoming a key strategic partner and acquiring roughly 27% of OpenAI’s for-profit arm, valued at 135 billion USD. However, since last year’s leadership crisis at OpenAI, Microsoft has reportedly been working to reduce its dependence on a single AI partner.
The industry views this move as a three-pronged strategy by Microsoft: diversifying risk away from OpenAI, strengthening its strategic supply chain with Nvidia, and collaborating with Anthropic on next-generation AI models.
Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, is rapidly emerging as a serious competitor to ChatGPT.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stressed that the AI industry must move beyond zero-sum and winner-takes-all mentalities. He noted that it is time to build sustainable capabilities together for the tangible benefit of nations, industries, and companies, adding that the opportunities in AI are too vast to be addressed by just one partner.
