Trump and Xi: Will the US-China Trade Deal Finally Happen in 2025?

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a “fair trade agreement” with China during his upcoming talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump revealed that he is already arranging a visit to China early next year and downplayed the chances of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Following a summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House on Monday, Trump told reporters he has a “good relationship” with Xi and anticipates meeting him at the Gyeongju APEC summit in South Korea. He stated, “It will be beneficial for both countries,” adding, “We have secured very fair deals with the EU, Japan, and South Korea. Now, we will achieve a fair agreement with China. By the time I leave Korea,  a very strong trade agreement will be signed.”

Despite some lingering disagreements over South Korea’s proposed 350 billion USD investment package in U.S. markets, Trump appears to view the agreement as essentially finalized, repeatedly suggesting that the deal is nearly complete.

Trump continued, stating that China has been treating the U.S. with “great respect” by paying enormous sums in tariffs. He warned that he could increase the current 55% tariff on Chinese goods to as high as 155% by November 1.

Addressing China’s rare earth strategy, Trump stated, “China has weaponized rare earths, but we can counter with aircraft parts.” He recalled a previous incident in which the U.S. halted parts supplies in response to Chinese threats, grounding over 400 aircraft. “Key industries like Boeing will serve as our negotiating leverage. In the end, we will secure a fantastic deal with China,” he asserted.

He also mentioned receiving an invitation from Xi to visit China early next year, saying the trip is “somewhat set up.”

On the Taiwan issue, Trump remarked, “China doesn’t want to take that action.” He emphasized America’s military supremacy, stating, “The U.S. has the world’s most formidable military force; no one can challenge us.” While acknowledging Taiwan’s importance to Xi, Trump downplayed the likelihood of actual military action. He referenced a previous Fox News interview in which he claimed Xi assured him that China wouldn’t invade Taiwan during his presidency.

Regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, Trump said, “We’ve achieved a historic ceasefire with Hamas. If they attack again, we’ll respond directly.” He added, “Hamas no longer receives support from Iran or any other nation. They need to behave.”

On the Russia-Ukraine war, he stated, “We’re pushing for an agreement. If we can’t reach one, many will pay a heavy price. We’re working to end this conflict.”
