CDC Vaccine Committee Faces Complete Overhaul Under Kennedy’s Direction

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that all 17 members of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) vaccine advisory committee would be stepping down.

Kennedy, the son of assassinated former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, is a prominent vaccine conspiracy theorist in the U.S.

In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal on the same day, Kennedy announced his intention to replace the entire advisory committee, claiming that A Clean Sweep is necessary to restore public trust in vaccine science.

The advisory committee members being dismissed belong to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which advises the CDC and Department of Health and Human Services on vaccine safety.

ACIP reviews vaccine data and advises on who should receive vaccines and whether they should be covered by insurance companies.

The committee consists of non-governmental experts from the private medical and administrative fields. They base their recommendations on rigorous scientific reviews and evidence.

The CDC director must decide whether to accept ACIP’s recommendations and incorporate them into policy.

Since taking office, Kennedy, the leading vaccine conspiracy theorist, has implemented various policy changes that have undermined the standing of vaccines in the U.S.

On Monday, he claimed that the Department of Health would restore public faith regarding both pro-vaccine and anti-vaccine agendas.

Kennedy also pointed out that some of the ACIP advisory members being replaced were last-minute appointments by the Biden administration. He argued that unless all these members are removed, Trump administration appointees wouldn’t be able to gain a majority in ACIP until 2028.

Kennedy argued that the committee has been plagued with persistent conflicts of interest and has become little more than a rubber stamp for any vaccine.
