The ‘Dirty’ Truth About Hot Coffee on Airplanes

A flight attendant has warned passengers against ordering hot beverages like coffee on airplanes due to concerns over unsanitary water tanks and coffee pot maintenance.

Kevin, a flight attendant for a U.S. airline, shared this information in a TikTok video, as reported by Daily Mail on Monday.

He stated that they brew coffee using water from onboard tanks, where mold and bacteria can thrive. He also shared an unsettling detail that flight attendants discard leftover coffee in the airplane’s restroom.

Kevin explained that for some reason, they aren’t supposed to pour coffee down the sink. Instead, they have to dump it in the toilet. This is an even bigger issue than not cleaning the water tanks because the pot has to be held close to the toilet, increasing the risk of contamination.

He added that If there’s no espresso machine on the plane, he never drinks regular drip coffee.

His video has amassed over 726,000 views, with many viewers vowing to avoid airplane coffee or calling for an audit of airline sanitation practices.

Other flight attendants backed Kevin’s claims, with one commenting that they had to throw coffee in the toilet, and they could confirm there were E. coli bacteria in the water tank.

Last year, former U.S. flight attendant Kat Kamalini also made headlines for advising passengers to only drink beverages in cans or bottles due to the extreme lack of sanitation in in-flight water tanks.
