A 61-year-old woman in North Macedonia, located in the Balkan Peninsula, has made history by becoming the oldest woman to give birth in the country.

On November 26, AFP and other sources reported that Irena Aleksioska Papestiev, director at a University Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics located in Skopje, North Macedonia’s capital, announced that the 61-year-old woman had successfully given birth after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF is a procedure where eggs are extracted from the body, fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting, and the resulting embryo is then implanted into the uterus through the cervix.

Dr. Papestiev stated, “The birth of the baby Petar by a 61-year-old patient shows that there are no more limits in the world of medicine.”

Both the mother and the newborn were discharged on the same day. The baby’s father is reportedly 65 years old, and it was revealed that the mother had previously undergone IVF procedures ten times.

“Our medical team closely monitored the mother throughout her pregnancy,” Dr. Papestiev explained. “She had pre-existing conditions of hypertension and diabetes.”

Meanwhile, it is reported that North Macedonia currently has no age restrictions for women undergoing IVF procedures.
