OpenAI’s Ambitious Plans: A $2,000 Subscription for Next-Gen AI?

Yonhap News

OpenAI is developing the next-generation generative AI model and is reportedly considering charging a $2,000 monthly subscription fee.

On Sunday, The Information reported that OpenAI is developing a next-generation generative artificial intelligence (AI) model to replace GPT-4o. This includes the new reasoning model with the code names Strawberry and Orion used in ChatGPT Premium. Currently, ChatGPT Premium users have access to GPT-4o for $20 per month.

The forthcoming Strawberry model will start with a chatbot similar to GPT-4o, while the second stage will introduce advanced reasoning capabilities. The new reasoning model is anticipated to be up to 100 times more powerful than the interactive chatbot.

The Information indicated that Strawberry might be released as early as this fall. Additionally, OpenAI is creating a new large language model (LLM) named Orion, which Strawberry is expected to help train. Orion aims to minimize data hallucinations and errors.

However, developing and maintaining these advanced models is anticipated to be costly. Although ChatGPT Premium is projected to generate $2 billion annually, it has yet to cover the platform’s operational costs fully.

The Information speculated that the $2,000 subscription fee might not be final and could be adjusted lower.
