23 Teeth, 12 Implants, and a Heart Attack: A Dental Nightmare Unfolds

Shanghai Daily, Herald Economics

A man in China tragically died from a heart attack 13 days after undergoing a complex dental procedure involving the extraction of 23 teeth and the placement of 12 implants.

According to reports from Shanghai Daily, Huang, a resident near Zhejiang Province, had extensive surgery last month at a local dental clinic. Following the procedure, Huang suffered severe dental pain and ultimately succumbed to a heart attack over a week later.

Staff at the dental clinic noted that while front teeth can be extracted and implants placed on the same day, molars typically require a recovery period of 3 to 4 months. Huang’s consent form, however, indicated that the procedure involved the extraction of multiple molars and the installation of implants on the same day.

Huang’s family claims that this incident constitutes a medical malpractice case and plans to take legal action, but the dental clinic has denied the allegation that no medical error occurred.

Huang’s daughter expressed her disbelief, saying, “I never expected my father to leave us so soon. Since this clearly appears to be a dental malpractice case, we will pursue legal action.”

In response, the dental clinic has countered that Huang’s death was not due to any medical accident and warned that they would take legal action against those spreading false rumors.

However, a dental specialist commented, “An adult generally has between 28 and 32 teeth, and removing 23 teeth in a single procedure is abnormal.”

Local health authorities have announced they are investigating the cause of Huang’s death, given the significant time lapse between the surgery and his passing.

Meanwhile, the dentist who performed the implant surgery has five years of experience and reportedly continues to practice normally.
