Kamala Harris Picks Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Running Mate

Yonhap News

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced yesterday that she has selected Tim Walz, the progressive governor of Minnesota, as her running mate.

Harris took to social media platform X to share her enthusiasm, stating, “I am proud to announce that I’ve asked Tim Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team.”

In turn, Walz described the nomination as “honor of a lifetime.”

Walz, who became Minnesota’s governor in 2019, previously served 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and 25 years in the National Guard. He also taught high school geography.

During his time as governor, Walz earned acclaim from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. His administration restored voting rights to people with felony records and legalized recreational cannabis. It also enacted legislation to provide complimentary breakfast and lunch for all schoolchildren and enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

With Middle Eastern issues expected to be a major focus in this year’s U.S. presidential election, Walz has demonstrated support for Israel. He directed state offices to lower flags to half-staff following Hamas’s invasion of Israel last year and has referred to Israel as a strong ally during his congressional tenure.

Political analysts find Harris’s choice of Walz, who is relatively unknown to many Americans, intriguing. U.S. media speculate that Harris selected Walz to bolster voter support in Minnesota and other battleground states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, where Republican candidate Donald Trump is concentrating his campaign efforts.
