Revving Up for a Revolution: Porsche’s Electric Macan Set to Dominate!

Financial News

Senior Retail Qualification Manager at Porsche Korea Lee Seok Jae said, “Based on the European Worldwide Vehicle Test Method (WLTP), the Macan’s driving range on a single charge is around 973 miles,” on June 24 at the Porsche Studio in Songpa, Seoul. He added, “The domestic certification is still in preparation and will be completed before its launch in Korea.”

The Macan Electric is Porsche’s second electric vehicle (EV) and the first electric sports utility vehicle (SUV). Porsche previously released its first pure electric sports car, the Taycan, in 2019. The most notable feature of the Macan Electric is its driving range. Although it has not yet received domestic certification, the WLTP standard driving range for the Macan 4 is between 321 to 381 miles and the Macan Turbo is between 322 to 367 miles.

Compared to the recently unveiled Audi e-Tron series, it can travel an additional 124 to 186 miles. However, Lee predicts that the driving range certified in Korea will be shorter than the WLTP standard. The battery capacity of the Macan is 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh), and according to Porsche, up to 95 kWh can be actively used. The DC fast charging output is a maximum of 270 kilowatts (kW). Porsche explains that with a fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 21 minutes. Another feature is the application of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the first for Porsche.

The PPE is an electric car platform developed by the Volkswagen Group, which allows for flexible adjustment of the distance between the front and rear wheels, the distance between the left and right wheels, and the height from the ground to the bottom of the car. Lee explained that the high-voltage battery is a key element of Porsche’s PPE and that the Macan 4 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds with the Macan Turbo in 3.3 seconds. The top speed of the Macan 4 is 137 mph and the Macan Turbo is 162 mph.

With the transition to electric and the absence of an engine, the trunk capacity has increased. Depending on the trim and specifications, the trunk capacity of the Macan has increased to a maximum of 540 liters. Under the bonnet, there is a second storage space called the “drunk,” which is 84 liters. The total storage space, combining these two, has increased by 127 liters compared to the previous model.

According to Porsche, if the second-row seatbacks are fully folded, the storage space at the rear of the body increases to 1348 liters. The head-up display, already available in other brands, has been included as an option for the first time in a Porsche model.

Navigation arrows use driving environment data and the car’s position to display on the moving lane. Through the driver assistance system, the designated distance from the vehicle in front can be seen right in front of the driver.

With up to three displays available, passengers can operate the navigation or use media applications in the passenger seat. Holger Gerrmann, CEO of Porsche Korea, said, “I am pleased to preview the Macan, which has evolved into a pure electric performance SUV model,” adding, “The Macan Electric, planned to be launched in Korea within this year, will be a game-changer that combines typical Porsche sports car handling, advanced and timeless design, long driving range, and high levels of everyday practicality.”

The price of the Macan 4 in the German market, including VAT and country-specific specifications, starts from $89,000, and the Macan Turbo starts from $135,000. The domestic selling price has not yet been disclosed.
