U.S. President-elect Donald Trump called Canada a state of the United States and referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a governor.
On Tuesday, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.”
“I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!” he added.
While this may have been a joke, Trump’s remarks could offend Canadian citizens and spark diplomatic controversies, as it could be regarded as a breach of etiquette.
On November 25, Trump stated that crime and drugs are flowing into the U.S. through Mexico and Canada. He announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all products imported from the two countries until the related issues are resolved.
Following Trump’s announcement, which caused the Canadian dollar to drop, Trudeau dined with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on November 29.
In this context, Fox News reported that Trump suggested to Trudeau that if he was concerned about tariffs, Canada should consider becoming the 51st state of the United States.
