Fencer Vivian Kong’s Triumph and the Big Bucks That Follow

Yonhap News

Vivian Kong from Hong Kong achieved a life-changing victory with a single gold medal. The fencer, who secured Hong Kong’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is now sitting on a fortune.

The South China Morning Post reported that the rail company MTR gave Kong a lifetime rail pass as a token of appreciation for her Olympic gold medal. On July 27, Kong won the women’s épée individual final in Paris, defeating France’s Auriane Mallo 13-12. Notably, this match was a dramatic comeback as Kong overturned an initial 1-7 deficit against a French fencer in a country known as the birthplace of fencing.

French President Emmanuel Macron watched the match live in the stands, with French fans overwhelmingly supporting Mallet.

Deliveroo HK recently updated its Instagram page to announce a special offer for customers. With the code VIVIANKONG, diners can receive a HK$40 discount at any participating restaurant when they spend at least HK$100.

Moreover, Hong Kong is among the top countries in terms of the prize money awarded to gold medalists among the 206 member countries participating in the International Olympic Committee (IOC). According to Forbes, Hong Kong’s gold medalists will receive over $768,000 in prize money at this event.

Hong Kong has previously won two of its three Summer Olympics gold medals in fencing, including a gold medal in the men’s foil individual event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
