The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is set to extend its trading hours by 30 minutes, shifting the market’s closing time from 3 PM to 3:30 PM, effective November 5. This marks the first change in closing time in 70 years, with the last adjustment occurring in 1954 when trading hours were extended from 2 PM to 3 PM.
According to Nikkei, the decision to extend trading hours was largely influenced by a significant system failure that occurred on October 1, 2020. The report noted that the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Financial Services Agency have long aimed to provide more trading opportunities for investors. The expanded hours will now realize this goal.
Meanwhile, NHK reported that the Tokyo Stock Exchange is urging listed companies to announce their financial results earlier.
Many listed companies in Japan are known to release their results after 3 PM to avoid causing sudden fluctuations in their stock prices.
