Kissing and Cuddling for Cash: Controversial ‘New Service’ Taking Over China

Women in China are sparking debate by offering hugs and kisses on the street in exchange for money.

According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP), a new trend called the “girlfriend substitute service” is gaining popularity among young Chinese people facing work and family pressures.

These women offer physical affection to men who are too busy for relationships or seek casual interactions. They advertise their services with signs displaying prices such as 1 yuan (about $0.14) for a hug, 10 yuan (about $1.40) for a kiss, and 15 yuan (about $2.10) for watching a movie together.

Additional services include attending events for 10 yuan (about $1.40), holding hands for 5 yuan (about $0.70) per hour, and offering housekeeping for 20 yuan (about $2.80) per hour.

In Yunnan Province, a woman promotes a “day boyfriend” service on social media. Her advertisement reads, “Daily boyfriend 600 yuan (about $84). Enjoy meals together, hugs, kisses, and the warmest care. No sexual relations.”

The SCMP report notes that many young women are turning to this street-based service due to fierce competition in the online broadcasting industry.

Public reactions vary: some netizens feel that as long as both parties are consenting, there is no problem. Others, however, warn that this trend could potentially lead to prostitution.
